What To Know About Usakos
Usakos is situated on the banks of the Khan River, along the B2 road, and is the closest town to the Spitzkoppe. It's about 140 kilometers northeast of Swakopmund and 30 kilometers west of Karibib. Usakos was founded in the early 1900s as a railway station between Swakopmund and Windhoek. The town's name is Damara for "grab the heel".
Usakos has many shops, stalls, restaurants, and souvenirs. It's also known for its wire toys. The USAKOS – Photographs Beyond Ruins exhibition was held in Usakos in 2015 and traveled to other locations, including the District Six Museum, the University of the Western Cape Library, and the Room Gallery in Johannesburg. The exhibition featured photographs from the personal collections of four women from Usakos, as well as color photographs by Paul Grendon.
