What To Know About Uis
Uis is a small settlement in Namibia's Erongo Region, known for its mineral wealth and location at the base of the Brandberg Mountain. Uis is situated on the C36, the main road between the coast and the Damaraland interior. It's at the foot of the Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain, which is home to the famous White Lady rock painting.
Uis was established in 1958 as a workers' settlement to exploit the local tin deposits. The Uis tin mine was once a major part of the town, but it closed in 1990, causing many residents to leave. Today, tourism is a key source of income for the remaining residents.
Uis's main source of economic activity is traffic passing through the area. The settlement has a small supermarket, guesthouses, bakery, petrol station, and a few other small shops.
The old mine recreation club, single quarters, and some of the houses have been turned into a tourist rest camp, restaurant, and bar.
