What To Know About Twyfelfontein
Twyfelfontein is a rock art site in Namibia that features some of the best-preserved engravings in Africa, located in the Kunene Region of northwest Namibia, Twyfelfontein is in a valley flanked by a sandstone table mountain. The site has over 2,500 rock engravings and paintings on 212 slabs of rock. The engravings depict animals like giraffes, zebras, and rhinoceroses, as well as human figures. Some of the engravings are estimated to be around 6,000 years old.
The site was inhabited by hunter-gatherers and later by Khoikhoi herders, who used it for worship and shamanist rituals. The name Twyfelfontein means "doubtful fountain" and comes from a family who built a house near a spring that they were unsure would provide enough water.
