What To Know About Tsumeb
Tsumeb is a town in northern Namibia that is known as the "gateway to the north". It is the largest town in the Oshikoto region and is the closest town to Etosha National Park.
The San (Bushmen), the original inhabitants of Namibia, discovered copper ore deposits near Tsumeb. The English-German Otavi Mine and Railway Company began industrial mining in 1900. The Tsumeb mine closed in 1996 for economic reasons.
The Tsumeb mine was world-famous for its rare and unusual minerals, including copper, lead, zinc, silver, cadmium, and germanium.
Tsumeb has a museum that houses mineral samples, photos, and records from the mine's history. It also has an open-air cultural history museum where people can set up huts and practice traditional skills.
