What To Know About Solitaire
Solitaire is a small settlement in Namibia that's a popular stopover for travelers crossing the Namib Desert. Solitaire is in the Khomas Region of Namibia, about 80 km north of Sesriem Gate in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. It's the last gas station between Swakopmund and Sossusvlei, and is about a two and a half hour drive from Windhoek.
The area was originally part of the Namib landscape, known as Areb. In 1848, Willem Christoff van Coller bought 30,000 hectares of land and built a cottage, dam, and stone kraal. His wife named the farm Solitaire, possibly after the solitude of the area. Solitaire is home to the world-famous Solitaire Bakery, known for its apple pie. Other attractions include a church, a petrol station, a general dealer, and a cafe.
Visitors can explore the area on foot, by bike, or by scenic drive. The Namib-Naukluft area includes Kuiseb Canyon, Spreetshoogte Pass, and Sossusvlei Dunes.
