Palmwag is set in a basalt landscape created by magma eruptions around 125 million years ago. The area is dotted with red rock, mopane and shepherd trees, and euphorbias.

Palmwag is home to a variety of wildlife, including black rhinos, desert elephants, lions, cheetahs, mountain zebras, Angolan giraffes, springboks, kudu, and African bush elephants. The Save the Rhino Trust protects the area's black rhino population.
