What To Know About Outjo

Outjo is a small town in the Kunene Region of Namibia that's known as the main gateway to Etosha National Park. It's located on the B1 road, about 198.8 miles from Windhoek, the country's capital.

Outjo was founded in 1897 by German colonial troops as a military base to explore the north of German South West Africa. The name comes from the Otjiherero word for "small hill".

Outjo has many places of interest, including the Naulila Monument, the Windmill Tower, and the Outjo Museum. The Naulila Monument commemorates Major Viktor Franke's expedition to the Portuguese fort of Naulila in Angola in 1914. The Windmill Tower is a stone base that supported a windmill that pumped water into a dam.

Lake Otjikoto is home to a rare mouth breeding fish species, and Lake Guinas is known for its beautiful setting and deep blue water. The Hoba Meteorite, the world's largest known meteorite, is located about 20 km west of Grootfontein.

There are many activities to do in Outjo, Namibia, including visiting nature attractions, museums, and taking tours.
