The busy bar seems to also act as reception as well as a restaurant and focal point for some of the town in the evening
Otavi doesn't boast a wealth of major attractions, unless you have a passion for caves. If so, plan to spend some time exploring the area, as it features numerous cave systems.
This marks the spot where the German colonial troops surrendered to the South African forces on 9th July 1915. It is only 3 km out of town and exceedingly well signposted.
Located on the Gaub Farm, 35 km northeast of Otavi, these caves are famous for their stalactites and Bushman paintings. Despite being on private property, they are a National Monument, so a permit to visit must be obtained from the Windhoek MET before arrival.
The caves are signposted near the junction of the D2863 and the D3022. Facilities are minimal, and visitors must inform the landowner before descending.
A small hole in the ground provides entry, but the powdery sand and steep incline make access challenging. These caves are not suited to casual visits, so bring heavy-duty torches if you plan to explore.
Situated 33 km northwest of Otavi, on a tectonic fault line, this cave system spans approximately 5 km. It is notable for hosting Clarias cavernicola, a blind, translucent, light-pink catfish species endemic to these caves. Interestingly, no young fish have ever been found, and their breeding habits remain a mystery.
To visit the cave, make arrangements at the municipal offices, located just to the right of the restcamp. This process may take several days.
More extensive than the Gaub caves, these caves feature multiple chambers and passages with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. With no facilities, they are considered 'unspoilt'. Arrangements to visit must be made at the municipal offices.
Located near Otavi, Kombat is memorable largely for its name. Positioned just off the main road, halfway between Otavi and Grootfontein, it is known in Namibia for its mine.
This has led to a thriving little centre with Bob's Self-help Bakery and a small post office. From Kombat, you can turn off to the Leopard Valley Pass and Gauss Guest Farm.
Intercape Mainliner's services from Windhoek to Victoria Falls stop at the Total service station at 23:25 on Mondays and Fridays, and in the opposite direction at 22:50 on Mondays and Thursdays.
Trains depart from Otavi southbound for Windhoek and Walvis Bay at 12:45 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. They travel in the opposite direction, to Tsumeb, departing at 08:20 on the same days.
The main Fourways Total service station is the best place to hitch a ride and sells drinks and snacks while you wait. The small local minibuses, typically VW combis, linking Otavi with Tsumeb and Grootfontein, also usually stop here.
A road trip across Namibia is an experience you will cherish forever, the freedom to stop wherever you want and explore Namibia on your own terms, for that you will need to hire the right car.
