Oshakati is situated on the B1 national road, 713 km northwest of Windhoek, Namibia's capital city. It's also about 45 km south of the Angola border and 120 km west of Etosha National Park.
Oshakati was founded in 1966 and proclaimed a town in 1992. During the South African Border War and Namibian War of Independence, the town was a base of operations for the South African Defence Force.
