Traditional Chores and Crafts
Lodge activity packages include participation in traditional chores such as pounding mahangu, open fire cooking, cattle herding, basket weaving, and clay-pot making.
You will have the opportunity to participate in pottery and basket-making activities. One of our experienced craftspeople will assist you in creating a gift that you can take away with you.
The Pottery Project
Pottery, along with basket-making, has a long history in the north-central regions of Namibia. The oshanas (depressions that fill up with water during the rainy season) not only provide fish but also deposits of clay used for pottery.
The Onankali Mahangu Paper Project
Mahangu, or pearl millet, is the staple food of the north-central regions.
It is highly adaptable, able to grow in low-rainfall, high-temperature environments
with low soil fertility.
Mahangu is consumed in a variety of dishes and drinks, and its stalks are
used for feeding cattle and thatching roofs. In 2002, another use for this
versatile subsistence crop was discovered: it became a key material for the
Onankali Mahangu Paper Project.
