The Moon Landscape, a remnant of an ancient mountain range also known as “badlands,” is a forbidding valley of hills near Swakopmund. Chiselled over centuries by wind and the waters of the Swakop River, this breathtaking landscape resembles the surface of a celestial body. There are several well-situated viewpoints; however, caution is advised as there are no safety barriers.
This area is home to unusual species of plants and animals found only in this desert. One notable species is Welwitschia mirabilis, which grows two long strap-shaped leaves continuously throughout its lifetime.
These leaves may be several meters long and are gnarled and twisted from desert winds. The tap root develops into a flat, concave disc as it ages. Welwitschia is remarkable for its survival in the extremely arid conditions of the Namib, sometimes deriving moisture from coastal sea fogs.
A road trip across Namibia is an experience you will cherish forever, the freedom to stop wherever you want and explore Namibia on your own terms, for that you will need to hire the right car.
