What To Know About Mariental
Mariental is a town in south-central Namibia, about 170 miles southeast of Windhoek, the capital. It's situated on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, along the Fish River, and is the administrative capital of the Hardap Region.
The town was founded in 1884 and named after Maria Brandt, the wife of Hermann Brandt, the first German settler in the area. The original name of the town was Zara-gaebia, which means "dusty".
Mariental is a center for Namibia's ostrich farming industry, and also processes and transports Karakul skins. The town's economy also includes irrigated farming, with crops such as cotton, wheat, lucerne, maize, grapes, tomatoes, and vegetables.
The Hardap Dam is located about 14 miles northwest of Mariental. It's Namibia's largest reservoir and a popular tourist destination. The dam provides water for irrigation and electricity, and the surrounding area is a recreation resort with activities like game viewing, birdwatching, hiking, and fishing.
