Mokoro Trips
Take a trip into the backwaters of the Zambezi in this traditional form of African river transport. Let your guide do the work while you lie back and experience the river's rich habitat. Traditionally, mokoros were made from leadwood tree trunks but are now manufactured from fibreglass as part of environmental preservation efforts.

species inhabiting the floodplains and surrounding areas. A large breeding
colony of Carmine Bee-Eaters can be viewed from mid-August to late November.
Between April and December, magnificent African skimmers are often seen
skimming low over the water or nesting on sandbanks. A leisurely boat cruise

❮ ❯
Kalizo Lodge is well positioned, just 120 km from Kasane, Botswana—40
km downriver from Katima Mulilo and 250 km from Victoria Falls. Visitors come
to experience solitude, space, spectacular river sunsets, comfortable accommodation,
and a friendly 'at home' atmosphere in this fascinating Caprivi area of Namibia,
known for its vast floodplains and rich birdlife.
The lush savannah area of East Caprivi is bordered by the Kwando, Linyanti, Chobe, and Zambezi Rivers, forming a region of swamps and floodplains. Wildlife in the Caprivi has recovered from years of poaching, and its superb conservation areas may one day rival Etosha. Almost 70% of Namibia's bird species have been recorded in the Caprivi.
Few places offer more spectacular sunsets than Kalizo Lodge. A sunset cruise on our spacious boat is a popular activity enjoyed by guests. Quench your thirst after a busy day in the African sun while enjoying breathtaking riverine scenery and birdlife with an ice-cold beer or refreshing glass of wine.
You may also have the exhilarating experience of seeing ancient river inhabitants
like hippopotamuses or crocodiles. From June to October, guests may witness
elephants drinking at the water’s edge or wandering through the camp.
Getting There
By Road
Kalizo Lodge is easily accessible by all vehicles from Windhoek via Rundu to Katima Mulilo or from Johannesburg or Zimbabwe via Kasane in Botswana. From South Africa, you may leave at border posts such as Martins Drift or others depending on your location before entering Botswana towards Francistown, then Nata to Kasane. From Kasane, travel through Chobe National Park transit road to Ngoma border post.
This route brings travellers into Caprivi which once formed part of the old Lozi kingdom before being given to Germany in 1890 as part of an Anglo-German Agreement without explaining implications to King Lewanika.
Once you enter Namibia, travel for 56 km until you reach Kalizo Lodge's sign;
turn right at this sign (also indicating Kalimbeza D3508) and follow until
you find another signboard on your left indicating Kalizo Lodge 5 km ahead.
The road into Caprivi is currently in excellent condition and connects directly
with Katima Mulilo—the only town in Caprivi with a road extending to
Zambia's border.
From Namibia via Windhoek
An excellent tarred road leads north from Windhoek via Grootfontein turning east at Rundu towards Western Caprivi over a bridge spanning the Okavango River before entering Western Caprivi National Park. At Kongola checkpoint cross over Kwando River before arriving at Katima Mulilo (meaning 'put out the fire' in Silozi). The road from Rundu to Katima Mulilo is tarred and in good condition throughout; however, expect a journey time of upwards of 15 hours.
Road Conditions
The road from South African Border to Lusaka in Zambia is also in excellent condition; please beware of travelling at night due to wandering cattle and game on roads.
