water with open beaks, or just lazily watch the great river go by, while
you relax and enjoy a delicious English Breakfast and bask in the early
morning glow of the river at its pristine best .
Mokoro Trips:
- take a trip into the backwaters of the Zambezi, in this traditional
form of African river transport. Let your guide do the work while you
lie back and and experience the river's rich habitat. Traditionally Mokoros,
similar in shape to a canoe but longer, were made from leadwood tree trunks
but nowadays incentive schemes to preserve the country's environment,
the boats are manufactured from fibreglass. Each poler is highly experienced
on the water and knows the 'highways and byways' of the channels as you
know the streets of your hometown.

of different birds which inhabit the flood plains and surrounding areas.
A large breeding colony of Carmine Bee-Eaters can be viewed from the river
from mid-August to late November.
Between April and December, the magnificent African Skimmers are a familiar
sight, skimming low over the water, or nesting on the sandbanks. A leisurely
boat cruise is likely to reveal the everpresent Fish Eagle, Herons, KingFishers,
Coppery-Tailed Coucal. The endemic birds include the Shelly Sunbird, Brown
Fire Finch, and Hartlaub’s Babler. The seasonal pools on the flood
plains attract a rich variety of Water Fowl.
Photography:
There can be few places on Earth that offer the photographer, novice or
professional, more varied or exquisite subjects than you can find at Kalizo
and in the surrounds.
Silumba Bar - Pool and Darts
After a hectic day on the river, under the African sun, guests
can enjoy a relaxing drink in our well-stocked bar,or the more energetic

monsters that got away. It is rumoured that more fish have been lost in
this convivial bar, than in the Zambezi River.
Getting there:
BY ROAD
Kalizo Lodge is easily accessible by all vehicles from Windhoek via Rundu
to Katima Mulilo, or from Johannesburg or Zimbabwe, via Kasane in Botswana.
From South Africa
One may leave South africa at the border post at Martins Drift or other
border posts, depending which part of South Africa you are coming from
and wish to enter into Botswana to Francistown, then on to Nata and up
to Kasane. From Kasane you travel through the Chobe National Parks transit
road to Ngoma border post
This brings the traveler into Caprivi which once formed the southernmost
portion of the old Lozi kingdom before the British Government gave what
became known as the Caprivi Strip to Germany in 1890 as part of the Anglo-German
Agreement. This was done without explaining the implications to the Lozi
king, Lewanika, whose son, Litia, ruled over part of Caprivi at that time.
Once you enter Namibia you travel for 56km till to you come to the sign
Kalizo Lodge, turn right at the sign, which also says Kalimbeza D3508
follow the road until you find a signboard to the left that says Kalizo
Lodge 5km. Or see the simple map below.
At the time of writing the road into Caprivi is in excellent condition
and connects directly with Katima Mulilo, the only town in Caprivi from
where a road extends to the Zambian border.
From Namibia via Windhoek
From Namibia, via Windhoek, an excellent tarred road north via Grootfontein
turns east at Rundu and skirts the Namibia-Angola border crossing into
Western Caprivi over a bridge spanning the Okavango River where one then
enters the Western Caprivi National Park. At the check point one crosses
the Kwando River, at Kongola before arriving at Katima Mulilo (which means
'put out the fire' in Silozi - the language of the local people). The
road from Rundu to Katima Mulilo is tarred and in good condition all the
way. The journey from Windhoek to Katima may take upwards of 15 hours.
