The Vogelstrausskluft Reserve was formed in 2001 with the view to re-naturalise three former sheep and goat farms situated in the Fish River Canyon area. Vogelstrausskluft Lodge was built close to the site of the old Vogelstrausskluft farmhouse.
Vogelstrausskluft Country Lodge overlooks an ancient dry riverbed with spectacular sunsets in this arid and interesting part of Southern Namibia alongside the upper part of the Fish River Canyon.

The accommodation at Vogelstrausskluft Lodge is divided into 4 stand-alone luxury suites and 20 standard rooms grouped in 5 thatched buildings surrounding the main area. The rooms are all en suite and the bathrooms include a shower and separate corner bath.
Laundry is available at an extra charge.
The air-conditioned rooms are spacious and uncluttered. Each standard room has twin beds and a sitting area with leather sofas and an ottoman.
The suites are a bit larger and fitted with one single and one double bed. Just as in the main building, dark wood and leather dominates the décor – the feel is reminiscent of a gentleman's club or smoking room.
Sliding doors open out onto a small private patio with directors chairs from which you can enjoy views of the valley below.
When you arrive at Vogelstrausskluft Lodge and enter the main building,
the first thing that strikes you is the dark wood, leather and beautiful
stone tiles.Something a little different from other lodges in Namibia, and
a nice feature are the huge rattan lights hanging from the thatched ceiling.
The main building houses the reception, reading room with a small library
and a large lounge set out with plush leather sofas and wicker armchairs.
There is also an atmospheric bar with a frame made out of large tree logs
and a natural wood bar top.
In the main building there is also a restaurant, lounge, curio shop, patio
and swimming pool is centrally situated and the thatch and stone finishing
blends the infrastructure into the environs.
The Fish River Canyon takes on a variety of forms. In addition to the deep gorge found further south, there are the surrounding plateaus, the canyon rim, and the canyon plains, which are scattered with small yet deep fissures and interesting rock formations. All these environments can be visited and explored from Vogelstrausskluft Lodge.
A variety of activities are offered here. Morning and afternoon nature drives, lasting a couple of hours, give you an overview of the immediate terrain and the scattered desert wildlife that might be spotted in the area.
It is also possible to join a full-day 4WD excursion across the canyon plains and down into the canyon's depths.
This is a fairly long and challenging drive that involves descending a very bumpy route into the canyon, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch by the permanent rock pools along the Fish River.
Various stops are made along the way to visit several viewpoints, breaking up the journey.
Guided walks in and around the lodge are also available. For more serious walkers, larger 2 or 3-night camping packages in the Fish River Canyon are offered.
Nature drives to the edge of the Fish River Escarpment may bring kudu, oryx, springbok, ostrich, zebra, and giraffe into view for nature lovers. In addition to the 24 twin-bedded en-suite rooms, we offer a variety of activities, including:
The lodge is built on the rise of a small hill, overlooking an ancient river course which forms a grassy valley below. The design and layout of the lodge means you can enjoy spectacular sunsets each evening whilst relaxing on the deck with a refreshing drink in hand.
A large mahogany deck extends out from the main building, offering great views of the valley and a small waterhole below. Wrought iron tables and chairs with shade umbrellas are scattered across the deck, and a small infinity pool is located at one end. Although there are no sun loungers between swims, the views from the pool more than compensate for this.
Pickup from Keetmanshoop is also available upon request.
The Vogelstrausskluft area stretches along the Fish River Canyon on the western edge of the Kalahari. The eastern farm border is marked by the middle of the riverbed.
The food at Vogelstrausskluft Lodge is predominantly European, offering simple yet well-presented and tasty dishes.
Breakfast is served between 7:00 and 9:00 am and includes a selection of cereals, breads, yoghurt, and fruit, along with eggs cooked to your request.
Lunch usually takes the form of a picnic while out on various activities. However, for those on a more relaxed holiday, a light selection is offered at the lodge.
Dinner is typically served as a buffet between 7:00 and 9:00 pm. However, if there are only a few guests booked at the lodge, dinner may be served as a set menu. There is usually a choice of two dishes for both starters and mains, followed by a dessert.
On our last visit, we tried a butternut and feta cheese bake, followed by a main of pork with apple sauce, served with roast potatoes and vegetables. The meal was rounded off with a chocolate and berry mousse. We thoroughly enjoyed every part of it.
Children of all ages are welcome at Vogelstrausskluft Lodge. Highchairs are available and can be provided on request.
Visa and MasterCard are accepted forms of payment.
Vogelstrausskluft Lodge is situated about 90 km south-west of Keetmanshoop on the D463. After the small outpost of Seeheim, a drive of approximately 25 km gets you to the Feldahorn turn-off (D463), from where it is another 22 km to the lodge.
