Welcome To Tiras Camping

A great stop over between Luderitz and Keetmanshoop. Enjoy camping in Namibia.

Tiras is a cattle farm with a total surface area of 12.000 ha of which 10.000 ha is utilised for breeding purposes. The farm is divided into 22 camps with a watering point for animals in each camp.

The Farm is traversed by the old ox wagon path linking Lüderitz with the interior. As early as 1900 Tiras was known to transport drivers as a reliable watering place, which members of the German colonial forces later on also made use of.

What to Enjoy at Tiras

The main things to enjoy at Tiras are REST & RELAXATION! The farm offers easily accessible vantage points, and enthusiastic climbers can reach higher areas at their own risk to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views.

History of Tiras

Since 1930, Tiras has been used as a farm for livestock breeding. Relics from early human history can be found on the farm, including bushman paintings, grating stones, tools, and pottery shards.

Location and Geography

The Tiras plain is located between the Rooirand (Escarpment) and the south-eastern foothills of the Tiras Mountains at an elevation of 1400 m above sea level. The highest point in the area is 1860 m above sea level.

The Koch Family and Tiras

The "Koch family" originally lived on their family farm at the "Lewer" River, which was purchased by the former German government for cattle breeding, vegetable gardening, and agriculture.

However, the farm had to be sold in 1963 in accordance with the Odendaal plan to enlarge communal areas. In exchange, Tiras was acquired and further developed.

In the 1990s, as people interested in botany and archaeology began visiting Tiras, the idea of starting a manageable tourism business was conceived. This idea came to fruition with the construction of a guest bungalow in 1995.

Fauna at Tiras

Tiras is home to various succulents, including lithophytes, crassulaceae, anacampseros, sarcocaulons, hoodia, euphorbia, and aloes.

Wildlife on the farm includes oryx antelopes, bat-eared foxes, black-backed jackals, springbok, rock rabbits, hares, reptiles, eagles, and hawks.

Due to severe weathering, unique rock sculptures have been formed at Old Tiras. We can also arrange dune drives on our neighbouring farm, "Excelsior".

Climate at Tiras

Tiras has an interesting climate where the rainy seasons of summer and winter overlap.

The weather can change unexpectedly, ranging from relatively hot days and cool nights in summer to mild winter days with occasional snowfalls and gusty winds.

Most nights are clear, and the starlit sky will leave an indelible impression on you.
