Welcome to Klein Aus Vista
It’s where streaks of Namib sand merge with the bleached grasses of the Pro-Namib in a sensuous slow dance of splendour. The lodge, nestled in the rocky Aus Mountains, is famed for its extensive and lovely vistas, best seen from one of the mountain bike or hiking trails,
a viewpoint above the campsite or from the secluded Eagle’s Nest Chalets. Contributing to the scenery, the Wild Horses of the Namib remind us of untethered freedom and appeal to our soul to embrace the wonderful adventure of life in its entirety.
ACCOMMODATION
Desert Horse Inn: The attractive and airy rooms are built in a style indicative of the late century farmhouse and painted a deep, rich sienna that glows alluringly in the late afternoon sunshine. Put up feet on your veranda enjoying Klein Aus calm, relax at the pool side, design in a unique horse shoe shape.
En-route you will discover WWI ramparts and an old Hudson motorcar riddled with bullet holes from an almost-forgotten shoot-out with diamond smugglers, viewpoints with extraordinary vistas, springbok and oryx on the plains and if lucky, klipspringer poised on the rocky slopes.
Relax with sundowners on the restaurant veranda or wooden deck watching the sun disappearing behind the mountain slopes, before enjoying a 3-course meal in the restaurant. Exchange travel experiences and recommendations at the Wild Horse Bar or at the cosy fireplace in the lounge before returning to your room for a good night's sleep and the anticipation of a new day.
EAGLE'S NEST CHALETS
Take time away from rush and routine of everyday life to recharge and to reconnect with the natural world. For a quality experience, treat yourself to a few days at the Eagle's Nest Chalets, built into rounded granite boulders with a rugged granite-gneiss mountain as a backdrop. Above, eagles may soar and in front, the expansive views will take your breath away. A 7km drive from the main lodge, the Eagle's Nest chalets are private self-catering retreats, each built individually, combining natural elements and boulders into their interiors in a rustic and luxurious blend.
You may just want to stay here forever. Choose whether to cook in the kitchen, on the fire or to eat in the Desert Horse Inn restaurant; take-away breakfast or barbecue packs are available on request. Eagle's Nest is an attractive base for those who appreciate boundless space, choices, a sense of the land, privacy, innovation, the out-of-the-ordinary and the spectacular. The Eagle's Nest chalets have been built especially for you.
DESERT HORSE CAMPSITE
Desert Horse Campsite at Klein Aus Vista is a magical campsite. It will call you back again like an echo. Resting in an amphitheatre of rock, it's a hideaway that evokes the feeling of wilderness although only a 2 kilometer-drive from Desert Horse Inn. The sites are positioned under giant camelthorn trees, some adorned with sociable weaver nests. Bird, tree and sky exchange stories. Klein Aus is renowned for this vista. You will remember these sunsets. As prime spot in the area, Desert Horse Campsite provides an ideal base to explore the south-western corner of Namibia.
At Klein Aus Vista camping pleasures are enjoyed to the full. Each of the ten sites is equipped with a tap, table with benches, grill and windbreak. We offer hot-water showers and flush toilets while the courtesy of Mother Nature provides space and grace. Note that there are no power point outlets at the Desert Horse camp. If you have equipment that need to be charged it can be done at reception of Desert Horse Inn.
Barbecue packs are available at the reception of Desert Horse Inn; those who like to skip cooking for a change are more than welcome at the Inn's restaurant. The Vista Trail leads to a lookout point where you can watch the sun disappear behind the distant horizon at the far end of vast desert plains. There's nothing quite like the simple pleasures: camaraderie around the campfire and the enchantment of a star-studded heaven rich in myths. On nights when the moon is a slender curve, look up at Orion's belt; find the Southern Cross and wonder.

ATTRACTIONS:
Wild Horses of the Namib
They roam the sparsely vegetated plains of the Namib Desert in small groups:
the Wild Horses. Over the decades they have conquered the desert as their
habitat. They come to drink from the trough at Garub, some 20 km west of Aus.
From a hide you can watch the horses and take pictures.
Kolmanskop and Lüderitz
From 1908 diamonds caused a village with grand mansions to sprout from the
desert. Today, sand has taken possession of the buildings: the deserted diamond
settlement of Kolmanskuppe offers numerous attractive themes for photos. On
a guided tour through the 'Ghost Town' you will learn more about everyday
life in the settlement and about its rise and fall.
The harbour town of Lüderitz on the Atlantic coast boasts a number of magnificent Jugendstil buildings. Visit historical Goerke House and the 'Felsenkirche' (Church on the Rock), go for a stroll through town to the recently completed Waterfront or drive to Diaz Point where Portuguese seafarers erected a massive stone cross more than 500 years ago.
Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park
The Succulent Karoo - after soft winter rains a sea of bright flowers in the
vast plains of the southern Namib. In Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park near
Aus you experience the most bio-diverse desert on earth. It is a landscape
of granite mountains, dry riverbeds and sweeping plains. To the east the park
(510 km²) borders on the Nama Karoo and to the north on the dune sea
of the Namib, where the Wild Horses roam.
Explore the park on our hiking trails - and join us on a scenic drive to see the unique flora and the fascinating Wild Horses. Lüderitz and the deserted former diamond settlement of Kolmanskuppe are no more than an hour's drive away.
