The Wild Horses roam the sparsely vegetated plains of the Namib Desert in small groups. Over the decades, they have adapted to the desert as their habitat.
They come to drink from the trough at Garub, approximately 20 km west of Aus. From a hide, you can watch the horses and take pictures.
In 1908, the discovery of diamonds led to the establishment of a village with grand mansions in the desert.
Today, sand has taken over the buildings: the deserted diamond settlement of Kolmanskuppe offers numerous attractive opportunities for photography.
On a guided tour through the 'Ghost Town', you will learn more about daily life in the settlement and its rise and fall.
The harbour town of Lüderitz, on the Atlantic coast, boasts several magnificent Jugendstil buildings.
Visit the historical Goerke House and the 'Felsenkirche' (Church on the Rock), stroll through the town to the recently completed Waterfront, or drive to Diaz Point, where Portuguese seafarers erected a massive stone cross more than 500 years ago.
The Succulent Karoo comes to life after soft winter rains, transforming the vast plains of the southern Namib into a sea of bright flowers.
In Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park, near Aus, you can experience the most biodiverse desert on earth. It is a landscape of granite mountains, dry riverbeds, and sweeping plains.
To the east, the park (510 km²) borders the Nama Karoo, and to the north, the dune sea of the Namib, where the Wild Horses roam.
Explore the park on our hiking trails or join us on a scenic drive to see the unique flora and the fascinating Wild Horses.
Lüderitz and the deserted former diamond settlement of Kolmanskuppe are no more than an hour's drive away.
